These boots are made for walking...

And that's just what they'll do, all around Boston this fall and winter!  I love boots, like so many New-Englanders, because they are a fashionable and practical representation of colder weather.

Coach - Cheyenne Boots
I've always been torn between fashion and practicality.  My Mom wears practical shoes - you know the ones - they're comfortable with little to no heel, made of stretchy material so as not to pinch the toes or back of the foot, and usually only come in black, brown, navy, or tan.  I love you Mom, but those are not my kind of shoes.  I prefer the ones with a sky high heel, brightly colored, brought out only for the most special occasions.  But what kind of investment is that?

But then there were boots!  There's an enormous selection to choose from: flats, chunky heels, booties, mid-calf, knee-high, thigh-high, stilettos, cut-outs, lace-up, wedge heels, fur lined, satin, animal print, no heels a la McQueen... well, I think you get the picture.  So really, boots are it because you can find the boots that suit your personality and comfort level while still looking stylish!

Timberland Bethel Boot
Currently, I'm obsessing over Coach's Cheyenne, black riding boots (see picture above).  They're classic and so well-made that I'm sure they will last me for years.  I'm also dying to get Timberland's Earthkeeper Bethel Buckle Tall Zip Boot (see left) in every color.  Not only are they comfortable and stylish, they are eco-conscious and will keep me looking fashionable through the multiple blizzards I'm sure Boston will see this winter (and looking stylish in 14 inches of snow when it's 2 degrees out is no small feat).  Before the snow comes, there will be rain and that's why Hunter Wellies are a Boston must-have (see below).  Not only do they come in a multitude of colors, sizes, and styles, but you can change the interior lining to add a pop of color that coordinates with your current outfit - brilliant!!

But with all the boots to choose from out there, how do you know what's the right boot for you?  Well, here are some helpful hints to finding the perfect one, or two.... ok or three. =)

  • If you have cankles, avoid short booties.  They will only emphasize your lack of definition between foot and calf.
  • If you're petite (5'3" or under), try mid-calf boots with a stacked heel.  It's important for the boot to be in proportion to your body, which is why mid-calf works great - it shows off your knees so your legs won't be cut off and the heel adds height.
  • If you have thicker calves, I'm sure boots must be difficult to find.  Check out Piperlime or Zappos for some great options that accommodate all shapes and sizes.
  • The most universally flattering combo is any black boot with black tights.  Your legs will appear to go on for days!
  • Avoid anything blatantly trendy on your boots.  Since you're spending more than normal on a pair (expect minimum $70), you'll want to wear them for more than 1 season.
  • Booties look best under pants, with tights and shorter skirts, or if you have long, slender legs.  Be careful not to chop your leg line with a pair that is straight across at the ankle.
  • Invest in classic colors with a comfortable heel height and minimal detailing.  Better yet, join sale shopping groups like Gilt or Beyond the Rack to get great deals on boots you'll wear for years.
Boots have come a long way from being worn exclusively by cowboys and pirates.  Hmm... that gives me an idea... maybe I can justify needing new boots for my Halloween costume?  Anyways, embrace the boot and I'm sure you will look fabulous. =)
